Travis Hunter (and Shedeur Sanders?) Number Retirement at the Colorado Spring Game

It appears that PUNK'd has gathered for a reunion of the University of Colorado's campus this spring, because I read an "official" statement that the school is set to retire Travis Hunter's No. 12 and Shedeur Sanders No.2 at this Saturday's Spring game. This absurd publicity stunt brings to question whether Colorado should have any jerseys hanging in the rafters at all? The Buffaloes won their sole championship in 1990, a team from which no players have had their numbers retired by the school. Instead, their rafters hold a trio of players that took the field before televisions were a household commodity (they could be characters from bedtime stories for all we know), and the program's first Heisman winner Rashaan Salaam. Nonetheless, Colorado's students and fans will gather for the festivities.

Travis Hunter is the second Heisman trophy winner to step through an otherwise irrelevant football program in the grand scheme of College Football history, so his achievements warrant some praise. The two-way player (reciever/corner) dominated both his positions in two Power 5 conferences in his time at Colorado, so its no surprise that the school would honor his contributions to their program in such a short time.

But Shedeur Sanders getting his jersey retired is nuts. He’s a good player and had a nice career at Colorado, but Colorado was not even a good team why he was there. Shedeur was a good player at Colorado, and will get an opportunity at an NFL career. He didn’t really accomplish anything as a QB at Colorado that would warrant a jersey retirement, however. He was an above average QB, in the weakest Power 5 conference, with the heisman winner as his top wide receiver, with his dad as the coach, and the team sucked in 2023 and 2024. What are we even doing? Kids are gonna look at their jerseys in the rafters and ask:

“Did Shedeur and Travis ever lose”?

Yes son, in fact, they had a tough time winning games, and played in the nacho bowl every year those two legends played for us. The lie that Colorado is trying to push here will probably be more widespread than that fraud, Santa Claus.
